Real Photos & Reviews from People Who Joined My Street Photography Workshops. From Complete Beginners to Experienced Pros.

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is witnessing your students’ skills grow, and with photography you get to see this first-hand. I also find it fascinating how they see the world, and how they are drawn to things that I don’t notice.

As Philip highlights in his testimonial below, my favourite word during workshops is ‘play’. I believe a playful mindset unlocks creativity, offers the most enjoyable experience, and leads to better photos.

I hope you enjoy the playful range of photos taken by my talented students, many of whom were jumping into street photography for the first time.

Ben Lee – I attended my second street photography course with Matt in Nepal and both were fantastic and incredible learning experiences. Matt is a brilliant teacher who is patient and takes the time to break down his approach to street photography techniques and situations. He is there for you at any point throughout the day at 1-2-1 level if needed and really pushes you to go further and be brave with your shooting. Street photography needs a certain level of perseverance and curiosity and Matt definitely helps bring that out of you on his courses. The reviews of work at the end of the day are really helpful with clear guidance on how you might improve an image for next time. My time shooting with Matt and the group in Nepal is one of my favourite experiences and I came home looking at when I can book another in. Not only is Matt a great teacher, he’s also a really lovely person and just great to spend time with. Highly recommended.

Carla Banc – Matt is a skilled street photographer, a very emphatic and kind human being. I attended Matt’s workshop with the intention to really set the basics know-how on street photography for myself. I definitely got more than I had thought. The structure Matt created for us with theory sessions, assignments, a local speaker, breaking down scenes for us while walking the street, training the eye to see beyond the messiness was well-thought through. Everyday I felt I am unlocking a big aha-moment and felt energised to go explore, play with my camera and potential scene/humans. The biggest aspect that stood out for me was to realise that so many things happen in the mind before even taking the picture. I thought I had an imagination, but this trip opened a new world to me that showed me everything is possible. Getting a glimpse into Matt’s mind and how he visualises the world before creating the picture is fascinating. No matter what question you had about a technique or personal challenge he offered words that really made a difference in the moment and changed my mood of being sometimes too critical with myself. Participating in Matt’s workshop I not only learned about street photography but also about myself. Focusing 7 days on one thing only really brings you closer to yourself and sheds light on what thinking/mindset/fears holds one back from really diving deeper into this world. Dedicating time to learn something in-person and structure by a teacher like Matt is a game-changer. It is an investment in yourself at the end of the day.

Kevin Kheffache – I attended Matt’s Dublin workshop and couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Matt’s depth of knowledge and passion for street photography makes him a ridiculously inspiring & talented educator. Matt’s morals & ethics shine through in his street teachings. He’s a gentle and kind soul and IMHO that’s something that is sometimes missing in street photography. If you get a chance, get on his workshops!

Rahul Khona – I had such a fantastic day on Matt’s Street Photography workshop in London. Matt is a fantastic teacher – super calm and friendly. The day was mix of learning and understanding the fundamentals of street photography and then going out and applying the knowledge in the real world! Coming from a wedding photography background it was great being challenged and thinking differently. One of the best workshops i’ve ever attended – highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn street photography no matter what skill level you’re at with your camera!

Ana Luisa – Matt is one fantastic being! I did his street photography workshop in London and am already booked for next October in Lisbon. Besides being a VERY talented photographer, Matt is kind and patient, and a safe space for those who feel self-conscious about starting ‘street’. The challenges were fun and he was always around for more tips and information. Everyone felt curious and in a space where they could share and learn from each other. I honestly couldn’t recommend him enough and I cannot wait for the next time.

Philip Wark – I’ve been doing street photography for a long time and thought I knew quite a lot but Matt taught me so much more. He is patient, kind, caring and knowledgeable. His method of teaching is suitable for all types of learners – he provides theory on why, how, where and when to take photos. He gives us the freedom to play, which is one of his favourite words! Make no mistake his workshops are hard work, he ensures that we get great value for money by using every minute of every day. He accompanies us on all our assignments, so is available to answer any questions and to give personal guidance when we need it, which in my case is quite often. I’ve been on workshops where you are given a little instruction and then told to go off and do our thing while the instructor does something else, as mentioned above Matt is with us all the way. Some workshop leaders let their ego get in the way of teaching, but this is not the case with Matt. I enjoyed the Lisbon workshop so much I’ve signed up for the ones in Rome, Kathmandu and Japan next year. Highly recommended.

Anne Scheers – I recently did a 3 day street photography workshop with Matt in Barcelona, which I highly recommend to everyone. Everything was perfectly organised, the pre-workshop preparation, the workshop itself, the leasure time, as well as the post-workshop summary. Matt is a very kind, gentle, friendly and cool guy with great photograpy knowledge and who has a way to make you feel welcome and safe. Theory, practical exercises and photo critique is being done in a constructive and supportive manner. I learned a lot. Apart from the photography, he and his lovely wife Corina provided a us with a varied insight of Barcelona, by showing us cool areas, bars and restaurants. I enjoyed this pleasant and valuable workshop a lot!

Jenny Rutterford – Street with Matt in London was one of my favourite ever photography workshops. A great mix of theory, practical and critique in a small group setting, which took me outside of my comfort zone without being scary or intimidating. Matt is generous with his time and knowledge and I learnt so much in a single day. But more than that, I came away excited to do more street photography and to give myself new creative challenges at weddings. Thank you Matt for a great workshop, I may well be tempted to join you overseas sometime!

Darren Smith – What an amazing experience! I have just spent 3 days in London with Matt and a small group of street photography enthusiasts, and I couldn’t be happier. Seeing London through Matts eyes was a life changing experience that will honestly stay with me forever. His calm and laidback approach to teaching made it a pleasure to be part of and the information he conveyed has changed my perspective on so many aspects of photography. Thanks to him I will forever being seeing the extraordinary in the mundane and embrace my photography with childlike wonder. Thank you so much, I cannot recommend this course enough and truly hope to do other locations in the future.

Charlotte Gage – If you get the chance to book onto one of Matt’s courses just do it. It’s incredible and you will not regret it. I recently did Matt’s 1 day course in London and learnt so much about the foundations of street photography. The day was structured in a such a brilliant way of learning some street theory in the morning and then going out and applying what we had learnt on the streets! we also had the chance to discuss what we had captured and learn how we could improve which left such a longing for more! A lovely way to spend the day with like minded people doing something fantastic!

Pamela Brady – I did Matt’s street photography workshop in Dublin and had the best day. It was my first attempt at street photography and was really pleased with how much I learned and how much I have incorporated what I learned in my photography in general. Matt is a very patient teacher and makes sure everyone gets one on one time with him throughout the day. The assignments are fun and the critiques at the end of the day are invaluable. It really was a worthwhile workshop and I highly recommend. A really great day. Thanks Matt!

Lucy Hall – I had the pleasure of attending the 3 day London course. Matt is a fantastic teacher as well as being a really lovely human. The small group size meant we all got to know each other quite well over the 3 days and we also got plenty of 1-2-1 time with Matt. As well as lots of time shooting we also learnt the theory as well as ethics surrounding street photography. In a few short days my skills and confidence improved. It was such a rewarding experience both personally and creatively – Thank you Matt!

Jo Quint – I booked onto Matt’s Barcelona workshop straight off the back of a one day London workshop. In the 8 hours of traipsing the London streets I’d absorbed so much information and been filled with so much inspiration and penny-drop moments and wanted more of the same. I wasn’t disappointed! I wanted to learn some of how he creates his magic and how he sees the extraordinary in the ordinary. The opportunity to spend three days in Barcelona, exploring the city, shooting and learning from Matt felt so indulgent. Matt is calm and reassuring. He’s always on hand to help with advice and suggestions – or to leave you to it if that’s more your style. If you’re looking for a hands-on small group training workshop, with plenty of shooting opportunity (I don’t think I put my camera down other than to eat, drink or sleep!), this is it. PLUS, Matt and his lovely wife Corina found some local gems for our food and drink – we ate and drank so well in some really cool and intimate bars and restaurants and I’d recommend this trip just for that! There are so many photography workshops out there but this one had something of everything – not sure you’ll get any better value for money anywhere else.

Ian Butler – An absolutely fantastic 1st Workshop for me! Matt was very informative and new his stuff, he presented a fantastic theory and backed it up with a street challenge. I thoroughly enjoyed the day it was great to be among such fantastic photographers, I have wandered in my local streets many a time and captured a ton of photos, but I actually now realise what I should be looking for in the street many thanks 😊👍

Sharron Gibson – Matt’s workshop was A* class! It’s a brilliant way to learn, with both theory and practical information. Matt takes you through the art and craft of street photography before you even hit the streets. He intuitively knows what you need to know but then is extremely helpful out on the streets to help focus your mind into creating some meaningful images. It’s a truly brilliant course and Matt is very generous with both his time and knowledge. He also has the added bonus of knowing all the best places to eat in town! Would definitely recommend to any beginners and professionals alike.

Erica Hawkins – I have been a huge fan of Matt’s work for years and love his approach to capturing people on the street, so when he announced his workshops I jumped at the chance to join him. I always wanted to try street photography but have never had the confidence or the understanding of how to best capture strangers. Matt was such a great teacher, the first part of the workshop was an introduction to the genre. Matt shared his passion and knowledge so clearly, with lots of inspirational images and tips for shooting. When we were shooting Matt always made sure we had clear guidance, giving us mini assignments which made getting started feel much easier. Matt’s ability to watch his attendees and give individual feedback while we were shooting was great, his encouragement and gentle feedback was invaluable. I have recommended his workshop to every photographer (professional and hobbyist) I know, and everyone comes back saying how great it was! I would highly recommend!!!

Becky Wood – Barcelona was wonderful. Such a great city to play with street photography and I left with so much knowledge and a fire in my belly to keep practising and try more street shots. I’ve now found that my wedding photography has massively improved because of the techniques I learnt and practised in Barcelona and it gave me the confidence to try more street photography abroad which I don’t think I would have ever done before. Thanks Matt, you’re a fountain of knowledge and the streets are definitely the photographer’s best playground!

Ludmilla Parsyak – We made it to Matt’s Street Photography Workshop at Crete and it was exactly what we needed. It was very well organised, the group had the perfect size to learn and socialise. Matt made us feel comfortable and safe. He was always close to us to support us on the streets. The information Matt provided was very valuable and I could transfer the new knowledge far beyond photography and it already helped me a lot in my daily life. I highly recommend joining Matt on every of his journeys and hopefully we will have the opportunity to take another workshop next year.

Anja Poehlmann – Street photography is exciting and scary at the same time. Having someone like Matt walk me through not just the theory and concepts of a great street photo but also give short exercises to try out different techniques, was absolutely amazing. During the practical part of the workshop, I felt pushed out of my comfort zone but only enough test the waters and not feel completely out of my depth! Photography in general but specifically street photography, is a very male-dominated field. However, throughout the workshop, I never felt out of place. And I actually think women have it easier in this genre because we might appear less threatening – however very few women dare to venture into this kind of kind of documentary photography. With Matt as a very natural and patient teacher though, this really is a great place to start venturing into this kind of photography, whether you already have experience or are brand new to the genre. I can fully recommend learning from Matt’s vast experience in this kind of work and inching out of the comfort of shooting what and who you know. The workshop gave me a boost of confidence and inspired me to make more time to go out in the street s and shoot for fun again!

Lise Abraham – I attended Matt’s one day London workshop and found his way of teaching very informative and helpful. I enjoyed the tasks he gave us which helped train the eye to see things before you take the photo- highly recommend anyone on their photography journey. I’ve just signed up for his workshop in Kathmandu.

Becci Wiles – I haven’t stopped raving about ‘Street with Matt’ since Wednesday. What a Street Photography Wizard this man is! I learnt so much in one day, he covered everything from styles, examples and composition to how to approach it morally and respectfully. The small group enabled him to give more specific feedback during the practical assignments out on the streets. I’d recommend this day to anyone! Thank again Matt!
