Chinese New Year Celebrations 2017 (a.k.a. the year of the Rooster) in a very wet London

On Sunday I went along to the Chinese New Year Celebrations in London for a bit of Street Photography. One of my goals for 2017 is to take more photos of personal projects. One of these projects is street photography and specifically making the most of living in London. Whenever I visit other countries I always pop out for a bit of street photography; yet when I’m home I do very little. This is madness because London is one of the coolest places to get out and explore with a camera. So when I saw the the Chinese New Year was coming up I stuck it in my diary.

“Diversity is our Strength” – Justin Trudeau

A few days ago, in response to the USA’s refugee ban, the Canadian Prime Minister (Justin Trudeau) announced that all refugees are welcome in Canada; stating that “diversity is our strength”. At a time with so much devision in the world, this was a beautiful statement to read. It was also something that I got to witness first hand at the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Looking around I could see people from a huge range countries, cultures, religions, ages and classes all together celebrating a national holiday from the other side of the world and it was beautiful! Diversity really is strength! And I feel so lucky to live in a city that recognizes it.

The London Touch

It wouldn’t be a celebration in London without some good old English rain. Luckily this didn’t put a dampener on the celebrations. Things kicked off with a parade running from Trafalgar Square to China Town. The whole of China Town was packed full of stalls, bangers going off and huge queues for food.

Gong Xi Fa Cai everyone! Here’s to an awesome 2017!
