Nestled along the banks of the mighty Hooghly River, Kolkata, often referred to as the “City of Joy,” is a mesmerising blend of old-world charm and modern dynamism. Its bustling streets are alive with a rich mix of sights, sounds, smells and flavours, which sometimes can feel like an attack on the senses. Wondering around you can easily spot the colonial influence in the architecture, the iconic old-style yellow cabs and cricket is huge. Kolkata is also one of the last cities in the world where you can find hand-pulled rickshaws.
Beyond the chaotic charm lies a city that embraces its people with warmth and hospitality. Its residents, known for their friendliness, hospitality and intellectual curiosity, will often invite you for tea and a chat at one of the many chai stands.
For street photography, Kolkata is buzzing will life all hours of the day and there are countless stories all around. Blink and you missed something.
Less touristy than some of India’s other cities, Kolkata allows you to explore a more authentic version of India’s urban life. However, as sadly in many Indian cities, poverty is prevalent in certain areas. As always, remember to be respectful and culturally sensitive of your subjects when on street photography trips.
